Increasing Demand
UK-based ISP Plusnet has recently reported that since the launch of Netflix in the UK, traffic across their network for streaming movies and TV shows from the site has increased exponentially with every passing day. Currently the demand accounts for over 60Mbps of their overall bandwidth at busy periods and this number is increasing with every day that passes.

It seems that users like what they see and this notion is backed up by research from Sandvine, which shows the average Netflix user in the US streams around 30 shows every month, accounting for around 21 hours of viewing time in total. To put this in perspective, this would account for around 6.3GB of data of average quality, or as much as 48.3GB of ‘best’ quality, which from Netflix can include high-definition content.

The Recommendations
Netflix’s recommended minimum speed for your connection is 0.5Mbps. If you intend watching HD shows, then it will need to be more – around 5Mbps as a minimum. Of course, these are minimum values and really the higher your speed is, the better the experience will be.

The Winners
Helpfully, Netflix themselves released the names of the best ISPs based upon their current activities in the North American marketplace. They stated that the best bitrates achieved for users were around 4.8Mbps, although few users managed to sustain that level of streaming throughout the entire broadcast. Often they would shift up or down depending on the demand for bandwidth with their ISP.

On the US chart for speedy streaming, Charter, closely followed by Comcast, Cox and Time Warner deals were the top four providers as checked by Netflix. In Canada, both Shaw and Rogers performed well, with both achieving higher speeds than their US counterparts. In the UK, it is still very early days for Netflix, so the proof remains to be seen as to which ISP performs the best. Early indications are that 32% of the UK Netflix traffic is from Virgin Media subscribers, followed by BT with 21% and Sky Broadband with 19%. Of course, this doesn’t mean these companies are performing any better than the alternatives, only that this is currently where the UK market is positioned.

Conclusions
Although it is difficult to point to the best UK ISPs at this stage, there are a few criteria to be considered if you are renewing your contract. As well as looking at the most competitive monthly prices, try to find generous deals for your data allowances. Media streaming is very data intensive, so to avoid costly bills at the end of the month look for unlimited or generous data plans. Look for the fastest download speeds, but also check what the upload speeds are. A ratio closer to 1 will offer optimum performance with Netflix and other streaming services. Remember that only fibre-optic cabled services currently support HD streaming. Look out for limited time offers or network specific discounts, such as the regularly offered Time Warner deals in the US, to secure the best rate with your chosen provider.
